Chapter Three: Extended Techniques

Transform your pitch combinations with extended techniques.

Make a new GarageBand file for this chapter (as seen in this video) and save it "Extended Techniques".

Different Sounds

Watch these videos to see how Van Reyk explores different ways of playing instruments to create different sounds!

There are three different ways the vibraphone is being played, list one word to describe the sound of each.

As you see new techniques being played, describe the effect of the sound.

Come up with words to describe the sounds and the mood these sounds create.

You can change the atmosphere of the same pitch just by changing the way you play it.

  1. Choose one of your pitch combinations.

  2. Take two minutes to explore the different ways of playing your note on your instrument (these are called extended techniques).

  3. Take turns recording each note in as many different ways as possible into GarageBand.

  4. Play the pitch combinations together - mix and match the extended techniques on each instrument.

  5. Record these into GarageBand - listen back and save sections that you like.

Now that you have explored the sound worlds of your instrument, choose which chapter to explore next, or by now you might be ready for the epilogue!

Make sure you explore AT LEAST two chapters, then the epilogue.
